Kelly George has given me some tips for the use of aromatherapy in pregnancy and birth which you may find useful:
Aromatherapy should be avoided in the first trimester, however, using peppermint oil, ginger or lavendar can sometimes alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness. Put a few drops on an infuser, a hanky which you can sniff, or atomise them. You can also diffuse them in a bath by mixing a few drops of essential oil with a cup of milk before adding it to the water.
For Constipation: massage the stomach with a with a few drops of black pepper and grapefruit essential oil (always mixed in to a carrier oil), in a clockwise direction.
Backache: get your partner to massage your back with a carrier oil with a few drops of black pepper and lemon added. Or use a compress with a few drops of geranium and bergamont.
Fat Ankles: massage by working from the feet up with gentle strokes as far as you can reach with a carrier oil with a few drops of geranium and bergamont and lemon.
If you are over due, bathe with a few drops of clary sage and jasmine in a bath (dissipated with a cup of milk).
If you are feeling anxious or fearful, spray an atomiser with a mixture of neroli and chamomile.
Pain Relief in Labour: massage with a carrier oil with a few drops of clary sage, ginger or lavender when labour is established. Use a hot compress applied to the lower abdomen warm water and a few drops of clary sage.
Beyond:
Cracked Nipples: massage rosehip oil (always mixed in to a carrier oil) in to the area.
Thrush: tea tree, myrrh, lavender and thyme in a bath tub waste deep with water with 1 drop of each oil into one tablespoon of base oil.
Perineum repair: Lavender and Tea Tree in a waste deep bath (2 drops of each oil, blended with 1 tablespoon of base oil and 2 tablespoons of salt.
Engorgement: Massage hard the swollen milk ducts with geranium rose or peppermint, 3 to 4 in total with a base oil.
For Babies: Cradle cap: massage with a carrier oil with a few drops of lavender and roman chamomile into baby's scalp and leave on over night. Wash off with gentle shampoo. Repeat daily for as long as necessary.
Colic: massage with a carrier oil with a few drops of lavender and roman chamomile into baby's tummy in a clockwise motion after a feed; place a warm lavender compress on tummy whilst bending knees to stomach (not yours... the baby's).
Coughs and colds: Add one drop of myrtle on baby grow or in a bowl of hot water under cot.
